The Options for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Are Growing

Posted

Car fuel has increasingly become sustainable through bio-diesel, ethanol, and methanol, with hydrogen under study as a potential addition. However, these tried and tested fuel mixtures cannot serve as aviation fuel, as planes have higher energy expenditures.

Current aircraft run on fossil fuel-derived jet fuels. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) commits to achieving net zero by 2050. Studies on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) analyze the viability of forestry waste and fat derived from plants and animals as the main facet of their four-point strategy for sustainability. As of writing, the IATA approves seven different biofuel production pathways for SAF.
